Bufo (5-meO-DMT)

A powerful non-ordinary state experience that supports profound psychological, emotional, and perceptual shifts.

The Practice

What It Is

Bufo refers to the secretion of the Bufo alvarius (Colorado River Toad), which contains 5-MeO-DMT, one of the most potent naturally occurring psychoactive compounds.

Traditionally used in ceremonial contexts, this medicine is known for inducing short but intense experiences that can profoundly alter perception and sense of self.

This is not a recreational experience.

It is a powerful process that requires preparation, guidance, and integration.

The Science

5-MeO-DMT & the Brain

The active compound in Bufo, 5-MeO-DMT, is a naturally occurring tryptamine that primarily interacts with serotonin receptors, particularly the 5-HT₁A and 5-HT₂A receptor subtypes, which play a key role in mood, perception, and cognition.

Research suggests that 5-MeO-DMT may temporarily reduce activity in the default mode network (DMN), a network associated with self-referencing, identity, and internal narrative.

This reduction in activity is believed to contribute to experiences such as:

  • dissolution of the sense of self
  • decreased mental filtering
  • altered perception of time and space
  • increased sense of interconnectedness

In addition, studies indicate that 5-MeO-DMT may influence global brain connectivity, allowing communication between brain regions that do not typically interact under normal conditions. This may contribute to the intensity and non-linear nature of the experience.

From a physiological perspective, the compound acts rapidly on the central nervous system, producing effects within seconds. It is then quickly metabolized, primarily through the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO), which contributes to the short duration of the active phase (typically 15-30 minutes).

While the acute experience is brief, emerging research suggests that psychedelic compounds, including 5-MeO-DMT, may support:

  • increased neuroplasticity
  • shifts in cognitive and emotional processing
  • longer-term changes in perception and behavior

Research in this area is still developing. This work is approached as a complementary practice, not a replacement for medical or psychological care.

How It Feels

Often referred to as the "God Molecule," 5-MeO-DMT has the capacity to temporarily dissolve the sense of self, allowing access to states that many describe as oneness, presence, or connection beyond separation. Bufo is a rapid and immersive experience. Within moments, the sense of identity may dissolve, and awareness can expand beyond familiar boundaries.

Experiences vary significantly and may include:

  • loss of sense of self
  • perception of vastness or stillness
  • emotional release
  • silence or absence of thought

This is not about leaving the body: but about experiencing a different state of awareness.

What to Expect

Kambo Kasey Medallion Emblem

A session typically includes:

  • Preparation, guidance, training on receiving the medicine and conversation
  • Intention setting
  • Guided breath and grounding
  • Administration of the medicine (drawing smoke / vapor into the mouth)
  • Active experience (15-30 minutes)
  • Rest, observation, and integration support
Body Effects

Bufo: What Happens During the Experience

Bufo is a fast-acting, immersive experience that primarily affects perception, awareness, and the sense of self. Within seconds, the body and mind may enter a state very different from everyday consciousness.

Physical Sensations

The body may experience:

  • rapid changes in heart rate
  • a surge of energy or intensity
  • temporary loss of motor control
  • deep release through breath, sound, or movement

The body is supported and guided throughout the entire process.

Perceptual & Psychological Effects

This is a non-ordinary state of consciousness. People may experience:

  • loss of sense of identity or "self"
  • altered perception of time and space
  • silence or absence of thought
  • bodily disassociation
  • a sense of vastness, stillness, or expansion

Unlike other psychedelics, Bufo does not typically produce detailed visual imagery. Instead, the experience is often described as:

  • formless
  • expansive
  • beyond mental interpretation

Emotional & Energetic Release

The experience may also involve:

  • deep emotional release
  • waves of sensation or energy moving through the body
  • spontaneous uncontrollable expression (crying, sound, movement)

Each process is unique and unfolds differently for every individual.

On Vision & "Psychedelic" Effects

While Bufo is often grouped with psychedelics, its effects are different from substances that produce visual journeys or symbolic imagery.

Rather than seeing visions, many describe:

  • a dissolution of boundaries
  • a sense of unity or oneness
  • a direct experience of awareness itself

For some, this may feel like: a complete reset of perception.

Duration & Return

The active phase is typically short, around 15 to 30 minutes. Gradually, awareness returns to the body, followed by a period of rest and integration. What remains afterward is often not the experience itself, but how it reshapes perception, clarity, emotions and presence.

Is This For You?

Who This Is For

This work may be suitable for:

  • individuals seeking deep psychological or existential exploration
  • those at a point of transition or seeking clarity
  • individuals ready to surrender control and process intense experiences

This is an advanced modality and requires readiness, both physically and emotionally.

Aftercare

After the Session

Immediate Effects

While the active experience is brief, the integration process is essential.

In the hours and days following, people may experience:

  • emotional sensitivity
  • increased awareness
  • shifts in perception or priorities
Ongoing Integration

Over time, this may translate into:

  • greater clarity
  • release of old patterns
  • deeper connection to self

Integration is where the experience becomes meaningful in daily life. If needed, a 1-hour integration call can be arranged to support this process.
